What makes the River Expedition different
This is not a Saigon day tour or a motorbike route. The program moves at river and market pace — private sampans, local ferries, hand-rowed boats, and light cycling on flat dyke paths — reaching backwaters larger vessels cannot enter. The western delta arc emphasizes Tra Su cajuput forest, Chau Doc, Cham floating-fish-farm village, and Hau River homestays rather than a province-loop cycling format. Boat-based travel
Days mix roughly three to five hours on water with light cycling when conditions allow. Movement includes small wooden sampans, private boats, flat-bottomed forest boats, and long-tail boats depending on the section. The guide coordinates daily routing around tides, ferry schedules, heat, storms, boat access, and host-family availability — not a fixed script regardless of conditions.
Sampans
Sampans are the primary way into narrow canals — water-coconut palms in Ben Tre, nipa palm tunnels near Can Tho, and quiet Hau River branches on the final homestay night. Hand-rowed sampans on Day 3 and pre-dawn boats for Cai Rang are part of the published program; boat type and timing adjust with season and daily access.
Cycling
Light cycling only — Day 3 includes an easy 25 km day on flat dyke paths between rice paddies and fruit orchards with guide support on monkey bridges. Hybrid bicycle and helmet are provided. This is not a long-distance riding product; motorbike expeditions are separate programs.
Floating-market timing
Day 2 starts before dawn to reach Cai Rang at first light — the published program boards a private wooden boat in the dark. Market timing, vendor activity, and boat routes depend on season and daily conditions; the guide confirms the final plan each morning.
Homestays
Riverside homestays and one boutique riverside night when quoted — shared rooms, mosquito nets, family kitchens, porch tea, and river noise at night. The final homestay along the Hau River has no road access — only the river. Expect simple comfort, early starts, and humid mornings — not hotel polish every night.
Weather

Tides and river access
Daily routing accounts for tides, ferry schedules, canal depth, and boat access. Wet months increase rain and canal access issues — market timing and boat routes adjust daily. Tra Su forest access, floating-market runs, and village stops depend on season and conditions confirmed before departure.
Who this expedition suits
Beginner to intermediate travelers who are food-curious, patient with slow water travel, comfortable in small boats, and able to accept 5am starts and simple homestays. Recommended group size is 4–6 travelers so boats, homestays, bicycle support, and market visits stay personal. Not for non-swimmers uncomfortable in small boats or travelers needing hotel comfort every night.
What to bring
Light long sleeves for sun and mosquitoes, sun hat, reef-safe sunscreen, quick-dry sandals, small dry bag for cameras, light rain shell in wet months, personal medication, and modest clothes for family stays.
