    The Experience

The Northwest is Vietnam at altitude: colder air, longer valleys, bigger passes, and villages that sit above the clouds. This loop is built for riders who want the mountain scale beyond the famous Ha Giang circuit — a serious ride across Thai, Hmong, Dao, and Ha Nhi regions with real distance, controlled pacing, weather buffers, and proper recovery built in.

    Day by Day

    The route, unfiltered.

    Day 1
    4–5 hrs riding

    Hanoi → Mai Chau

Hanoi · Hoa Binh · Thung Khe Pass · Mai Chau
Clear the city early and climb through Hoa Binh toward the Thai valleys of Mai Chau. This is the control day: bike fit, pace calibration, and the first mountain pass. Overnight in a stilt-house valley with a full route briefing for the high country ahead.
    Day 2
    4–5 hrs riding

    Mai Chau → Moc Chau

Mai Chau · Pa Co · Moc Chau Plateau
Ride small roads through limestone villages and tea country toward Moc Chau. Depending on conditions, the guide may add short dirt connectors or keep the day scenic and smooth. Evening bike check and cool plateau air.
    Day 3
    5–6 hrs riding

    Moc Chau → Ta Xua

Moc Chau · Bac Yen · Ta Xua ridge
A more demanding day into sharper mountains. Climb toward Ta Xua, known for cloud inversions and narrow ridge roads. The route requires calm cornering and patience with fog; the reward is one of the most atmospheric mountain nights in northern Vietnam.
    Day 4
    6 hrs riding

Ta Xua → Mu Cang Chai

Ta Xua · Nghia Lo · Khau Pha Pass · Mu Cang Chai
Descend through Bac Yen, cross into Yen Bai province, then climb Khau Pha Pass toward Mu Cang Chai. In rice season, this is one of Asia's great terrace landscapes; outside harvest, it remains a strong riding day of sweepers, climbs, and valley stops.
    Day 5
    5–6 hrs riding

    Mu Cang Chai → Sapa

Mu Cang Chai · Than Uyen · O Quy Ho Pass · Sapa
Ride toward the Hoang Lien Son range and cross O Quy Ho, one of Vietnam's highest major passes. Weather can change quickly here; the guide controls speed and stop timing. Arrive Sapa for a warmer hotel night, laundry, and mechanical check.
    Day 6
    4–5 hrs riding

    Sapa → Y Ty

    Sapa · Muong Hum · Y Ty
Leave the busier Sapa corridor for the remote borderlands around Y Ty. Roads are smaller, villages are quieter, and cloud often sits below the ridge. This is a cultural and scenic day, not a race day.
    Day 7
    5–6 hrs riding

    Y Ty → Bac Ha

Y Ty · Lao Cai · Bac Ha
Ride through Ha Nhi and Hmong areas toward Bac Ha. If the calendar aligns, the itinerary can be adjusted for the Bac Ha Sunday market, one of the region's most important highland markets. Overnight in Bac Ha town.
    Day 8
    6–7 hrs riding

    Bac Ha → Sin Ho

Bac Ha · Lai Chau · Sin Ho Plateau
A long, less-touristed crossing toward Sin Ho. Expect big valleys, rough repair sections, and fewer services. The plateau can be cold and foggy; this is where preparation and layered gear matter.
    Day 9
    6 hrs riding

Sin Ho → Dien Bien Phu

Sin Ho · Muong Lay · Dien Bien Phu
Descend toward Muong Lay and follow the mountain roads into Dien Bien Phu, a place central to modern Vietnamese and French history. The riding is varied and the context is serious; the evening includes time for museum or battlefield interpretation if open.
    Day 10
    6 hrs riding

    Dien Bien → Son La

Dien Bien Phu · Pha Din Pass · Son La
Cross Pha Din Pass, a legendary northwest climb, then continue toward Son La. This is the standard 10-day return arc and a strong final mountain day before the road back to Hanoi.
    Day 11
    5–6 hrs riding

Extension: Son La → Pu Luong

Son La · Moc Chau · Pu Luong
For 12–14 day programs, continue through valleys and smaller roads toward Pu Luong Nature Reserve. This breaks the return into a better-paced journey and adds a beautiful final homestay region.
    Day 12
    2–4 hrs optional riding

Extension: Pu Luong Rest / Local Loop

    Pu Luong Nature Reserve
Optional recovery day or light local loop through water wheels, rice terraces, and Thai villages. This day is recommended for 14-day versions to keep the expedition professional rather than rushed.
    Day 13
    5 hrs riding

Extension: Pu Luong → Ninh Binh

Pu Luong · Cuc Phuong area · Ninh Binh
Ride east toward Ninh Binh's limestone landscape, giving the group a final scenic stop before returning to the capital. Road choice depends on traffic and weather.
    Day 14
    3–4 hrs riding

    Ninh Binh → Hanoi

    Ninh Binh · Hanoi
Final controlled ride or supported transfer back to Hanoi. Bike handover, debrief, and farewell dinner. The extension version ends with less fatigue and a better safety margin.

    Lead Northwest Guide

    Duong Nguyen

15 years · High-pass pacing, fog decisions, and remote village coordination

Duong controls Northwest rides by reading weather, fatigue, road works, and village timing. His job is to keep the expedition serious without letting the mountains turn the schedule into a race.

"The Northwest rewards patience. If the fog says wait, we wait — then the pass opens and the ride becomes worth it."
    Long Pham
    Route Mechanic

    Long Pham

10 years · Enduro setup, field repairs, tire and brake checks

Long prepares the bikes for cold mornings, long descents, and rough repair sections, then rides sweep so guests can focus on the road instead of the machine.

"A long loop is won before breakfast: tires, brakes, chain, fuel, layers — then we ride."
