    The Experience

    The northeast is quieter than Ha Giang and more expansive than most riders expect: lake country, Tay stilt-house villages, karst valleys, border waterfalls, and long empty roads where the map folds toward China. This itinerary follows real northern corridors used by experienced Vietnam operators, with enough flexibility to extend from seven to ten days when conditions and rider appetite allow.

    Day 1
    5–6 hrs riding

    Hanoi → Ba Be National Park

    Hanoi · Thai Nguyen · Ba Be Lake
    Leave Hanoi early to clear the delta traffic, then transition into the hills of Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan. Arrive at Ba Be National Park for a lakeside Tay homestay. This is the soft landing: boat sounds, limestone cliffs, and a quiet dinner before the real border riding begins.

    Ba Be → Cao Bang

    Ba Be · Nguyen Binh · Cao Bang City
    Backroads climb through tea country, forested valleys, and small Tay and Nung communities. The guide keeps the pace steady with stops for road condition checks and local coffee. Arrive Cao Bang, the practical base for the waterfall and eastern border roads.

    Cao Bang → Ban Gioc Waterfall

    Ride the Quay Son river corridor toward Ban Gioc, one of Vietnam's most impressive border waterfalls. Visit Nguom Ngao Cave when operating conditions allow. The day combines scenery and context rather than mileage: limestone peaks, rice paddies, water buffalo, and the feeling of standing at the edge of two countries.

    Ban Gioc → Tra Linh → Cao Bang

    Ban Gioc · Tra Linh · Mat Than Mountain area · Cao Bang
    Loop through lesser-ridden karst valleys north of Cao Bang, with route variations chosen by weather and road works. When possible, include the Tra Linh area and viewpoint stops around the Angel Eye / Mat Than landscape. Return to Cao Bang for a proper rest, laundry, and bike check.
    Day 5
    5–6 hrs riding

    Cao Bang → Bao Lac

    Cao Bang · Tinh Tuc · Bao Lac
    A beautiful mountain transfer west through old mining roads and limestone valleys. The road surface changes often: clean tarmac, broken edges, gravel repair sections, and village lanes. Bao Lac is a small frontier town and a useful gateway toward either Ha Giang or a return loop.
    Day 6
    5–6 hrs riding

    Bao Lac → Meo Vac → Dong Van

    Bao Lac · Khau Vai · Meo Vac · Ma Pi Leng · Dong Van
    For the longer version, cross toward Meo Vac and ride the Ma Pi Leng corridor into Dong Van. For a 7-day version, the guide may shorten the day and avoid Ha Giang if weather turns poor. This is the expedition's most dramatic high-pass section and demands focused, respectful riding.
    Day 7

    Dong Van → Ha Giang City

    Dong Van · Yen Minh · Quan Ba · Ha Giang City
    Ride out through the Dong Van Karst Plateau, descending via Yen Minh and Quan Ba. Debrief and overnight in Ha Giang, or continue by transfer depending on the selected package. This is the standard 7-day finish point for riders who want the northeast plus a taste of Ha Giang.

    Extension: Ha Giang → Bac Son

    Ha Giang · Na Hang area · Bac Son Valley
    Optional extension day for stronger riders: leave Ha Giang through quieter hill roads toward the rice valleys of Bac Son. This day adds distance and variety while avoiding a rushed highway return.
    Day 9
    5–6 hrs riding

    Extension: Bac Son → Lang Son / Mau Son

    Bac Son · Lang Son · Mau Son
    Ride toward Lang Son and, weather permitting, climb Mau Son for colder air, pine forest, and old French-era ruins. This extension is especially rewarding in clear winter light.
    Day 10
    4–6 hrs riding

    Return to Hanoi

    Lang Son / Bac Son · Hanoi
    Final ride or supported transfer back to Hanoi, followed by bike handover and farewell dinner. The return plan is confirmed after the guide reviews rider fatigue, traffic, and road conditions.
