Hanoi departure logistics
Unlike the Ha Giang Expedition, riding begins from Hanoi on Day 1 — early departure to clear delta traffic, then transition through Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan toward Ba Be. Most guests arrive in Hanoi the day before; bike fitting and the full route briefing happen once the expedition begins. Return is by riding or supported transfer depending on whether you book the 7-day or 10-day version — final endpoints are confirmed in your written proposal.
Guide-led expedition vs self-guided northeast riding
Independent riders can rent bikes in Hanoi or regional towns and piece together Ba Be, Cao Bang, and Ban Gioc on their own schedule — lower cost, your own pacing. This product is a guide-led expedition with daily weather and road checks, verified northeast waypoints, mechanic / sweep support when confirmed in your written proposal, and accommodation registration handled for you. Choose self-guided for maximum flexibility; choose this expedition if you want professional pacing across consecutive border-country days.
Ba Be, Cao Bang, and Ban Gioc
The core arc runs through established northeast riding corridors: lakeside Tay homestays at Ba Be National Park, tea-country backroads into Cao Bang City, the Quay Son river approach to Ban Gioc waterfall, and Nguom Ngao Cave when operating conditions allow. Days 4–5 push west through Tra Linh, Bao Lac, and lesser-ridden karst valleys before the optional high-pass section. 7-day vs 10-day format
7-day version (Days 1–7): Hanoi → Ba Be → Cao Bang → Ban Gioc → Bao Lac → optional Meo Vac / Ma Pi Leng / Dong Van → Ha Giang City finish. 10-day version (Days 8–10): optional extensions through Bac Son valley, Lang Son / Mau Son, and return to Hanoi. Extension days and final return plan depend on rider fatigue, weather, and road conditions — confirmed in your written proposal, not guaranteed on every departure.
Ma Pi Leng extension · not the Ha Giang Loop product
Days 6–7 on longer versions cross toward Meo Vac and ride the Ma Pi Leng corridor into Dong Van before finishing in Ha Giang City. That section is part of this 7–10 day border-country arc — Ba Be, Ban Gioc, and Cao Bang come first — not a substitute for the compact four-day Ha Giang Expedition. Road conditions and safety
Surfaces mix mountain tarmac, broken edges, gravel repair sections, and village lanes. Border-area access, landslides, and road works can change timing daily. The guide confirms the track after weather and road review; support level, insurance, and emergency provisions must be confirmed in your written proposal before booking.
Which northern expedition is right for you?
