    By Viet Expedition·

    The decision: is the

Northwest Loop the right northern ride for you — versus the four-day

    Ha Giang Expedition?

    Season:

    when to ride Vietnam. Gear:

expedition gear checklist northern mountains module (add cold-layer emphasis from Northwest bring list). Licensing:

Vietnam motorbike license and insurance. Shorter north loop:

    Ha Giang field guide.

    Product identity

    10–14 days · North · Ride · Hardcore · Intermediate+ · 5–7 hrs/day · 300 m–2,000 m+ · Best Sep–Apr · cold in winter, fog common at altitude.

Terrain: high mountain roads, broken tarmac, selected dirt valleys. Built for riders who want mountain scale beyond the Ha Giang circuit — Thai, Hmong, Dao, and Ha Nhi regions with weather buffers and recovery built in.

    Go / no-go · season and fog

Product weather: best September–April; cold in winter; fog common at altitude.

Northwest Loop page. Northwest product note on

when to ride Vietnam: Sep–Apr band; cold and fog at altitude in winter.

Trust safety: route includes professional buffer options because fog, landslides, and construction can alter northwest timing.

Decision impact: if you cannot accept fog delays or cold plateau nights, book

Ha Giang instead of a two-week northwest arc.

    Ten-day spine · decision legs

Days 1–2 — Hanoi → Mai Chau → Moc Chau: control and calibration days (4–5 hrs each).

Day 3 — Moc Chau → Ta Xua: demanding climb; fog and narrow ridge roads — patience required.

Day 4 — Ta Xua → Mu Cang Chai via Khau Pha Pass: 6 hrs; terrace landscape in rice season.

Day 5 — Mu Cang Chai → Sapa via O Quy Ho: one of Vietnam's highest major passes; weather changes quickly.

Days 6–7 — Sapa → Y Ty → Bac Ha: leave busier Sapa corridor; optional Bac Ha Sunday market timing.

Days 8–9 — Bac Ha → Sin Ho → Dien Bien Phu: long crossings, fewer services, rough repair sections.

Day 10 — Dien Bien → Son La via Pha Din Pass: standard 10-day finish arc before return toward Hanoi.

    Format · 10, 12, or 14 days

10 days — finish Son La arc; choose if time is fixed and you accept a strong final mountain day without Pu Luong recovery.

12–14 days — extensions through Pu Luong, optional rest day, Ninh Binh limestone, controlled return Hanoi — recommended on product for less fatigue and better safety margin.

Quote depends on 10, 12, or 14-day route design — confirm endpoints on written quote.

Northwest vs Northeast Border · vs Ha Giang

    Four days —

Ha Giang Expedition: classic Ma Pi Leng arc when time is fixed —

    Ha Giang field guide.

    Seven to ten days —

Northeast Border Expedition: Ba Be, Cao Bang, Ban Gioc, optional Meo Vac extension. Border waterfalls and karst lakes — not the same high-pass traverse as Northwest.

Northwest is altitude, fog, O Quy Ho, Sin Ho, and Dien Bien — the longest northern riding arc on our catalog.

    Failure modes

Fog on Ta Xua, O Quy Ho, or Sin Ho — product expects calm cornering and guide-led waits; not a race day.

Cold without layering — bring list requires warm base layer, windproof mid-layer, waterproof gloves, neck buff.

Consecutive 5–7 hr days with strong fitness demand — fatigue accumulates after day 8.

Broken tarmac and rough repair sections — skill requirement includes comfort in fog, cold, broken tarmac, variable surfaces.

Support vehicle excluded from base price unless selected — decide at booking for luggage or injury margin.

    Support · group · gear

Honda / Yamaha-style enduro or adventure-ready manual matched to ability; daily tire and brake checks; mechanic / sweep on group departures.

Built for 2–6 riders — larger groups not recommended on remote high-pass sections.

Duong Nguyen (lead) — high-pass pacing, fog decisions; Long Pham (mechanic) — field repairs, tire and brake checks — published bios only.

Who should book · and who should not

Book if: Intermediate+ with mountain-pass experience; strong fitness; patient with weather and guide-led route changes.

Do not book if: you want a four-day highlight loop —

Ha Giang field guide; you hate cold or fog; you need a fixed daily script.
