The decision this article supports: given the expedition you booked — or the environment you are planning toward — what do you pack, what do we supply, and what mistakes cost you a day?

This is the canonical gear reference for the Journal. It is not a universal Vietnam travel list. A

Step 1 — Open your expedition product page and read the gear block on that page. It is the final authority for your quote.

Step 2 — Find your environment module below (northern mountains, Ho Chi Minh Trail, jungle trek, cave, Mekong Delta, or coastal ride).

Step 3 — Pack must-bring items first. Add strongly recommended and optional items only where your product page lists them.

Multi-environment trips — especially

North–South Vietnam — need a layering system and soft luggage, not the minimum kit for one zone alone.

These appear across ride, trek, cave, and delta products. Treat them as non-negotiable unless your specific expedition page says otherwise.

Riders must bring: passport (hotel check-in and local registration on motorbike products); personal medication; travel insurance documents where the product bring list includes them.

Riders must bring (motorbike expeditions): valid motorcycle license / IDP where applicable — on

Ha Giang,

Northwest Loop,

Ho Chi Minh Trail, and

North–South Vietnam product pages.

We do not provide (all products): international or domestic flights; Vietnam visa / e-visa; travel and motorcycle insurance; personal riding gear upgrades; tips. Confirm your written quote for support vehicles, single rooms, and add-ons.

Ha Giang Expedition,

Northwest Loop,

Northeast Border Expedition. Terrain: high passes, karst backroads, cold-at-altitude nights inside the published Oct–Apr (or Sep–Apr on Northwest) planning bands.

We provide: well-maintained manual motorcycle matched to rider ability (Northwest: Honda / Yamaha-style enduro or adventure-ready manual); helmet, basic armor, gloves, and rain cover or rain support; lead guide and mechanic / sweep support on group departures; soft luggage system or luggage straps; daily route briefing, weather review, and safety protocol; local permits and accommodation registration support; route map and PDF itinerary (Northwest adds daily bike inspection and tire / brake checks).

Riders must bring: riding boots or sturdy ankle-covering boots; light rain layer; warm mid-layer (Northwest also lists warm base layer and windproof mid-layer); sunglasses or clear riding glasses (Ha Giang / Northwest); personal medication; passport.

Strongly recommended: waterproof gloves and neck warmer / buff for high passes — on the

Northwest Loop bring list; warm layer for winter departures — on

Northeast Border.

Optional: small dry bag (Ha Giang); power bank and compact daypack (Northwest); swimwear / quick-dry clothes for Ba Be or waterfall areas (Northeast).

Not recommended: expecting premium personal armor as included — product notIncluded lists personal riding gear upgrades; hard suitcases —

North–South Vietnam specifies soft duffel rather than hard suitcase for multi-leg luggage.

Applies to:

Ho Chi Minh Trail Expedition. Terrain: jungle mountain roads, broken tarmac, optional dirt, long remote sections with sparse services — inside the published Feb–Aug planning window. Pacing, fuel logic, and failure modes:

We provide: suitable dual-sport / touring motorcycle matched to rider ability; helmet, gloves, basic armor, and rain support; lead guide plus mechanic / sweep support; tool kit, basic spares, and daily bike inspection; fuel planning and remote-section route control; daily route briefing with weather, history, and safety context; PDF itinerary, route map, and emergency contacts.

Riders must bring: valid motorcycle license / IDP where applicable; riding boots or sturdy ankle-covering boots; hydration system or large refillable bottle; lightweight rain shell and quick-dry layers; sun protection and clear riding glasses; personal medication and insurance documents; headlamp for remote stays and evening checks; passport.

Strongly recommended: headlamp — listed on the product bring list because services are limited and evenings are used for bike checks and camp logistics.

Optional: support vehicle — available by quote on

North–South Vietnam but notIncluded on the standalone Trail product unless selected.

Not recommended: packing for coast or delta heat only — this corridor crosses mountain weather; ignoring daily fuel and weather briefings on sections where the product notes sparse services.

Three distinct trek products — do not pack for Sapa when you booked Central Highlands jungle.

Sapa Hidden Trek —

(product page): mountain footpath, homestays, river crossings to waist depth on published itinerary.

We provide: local mountain guide; porter support for main luggage; homestay bedding and basic washing access; all meals on trail; daily route and weather briefing; permits and village coordination.

Riders must bring: broken-in trail shoes with grip; daypack around 25L; rain shell or poncho; warm layer for misty mornings; headlamp; dry bag / pack liner; personal medication and blister care; reusable water bottle.

Central Highlands Jungle Expedition —

(product page): humid forest, red-earth trails, leeches possible May–Oct per product weather note.

We provide: local jungle guide and support team; porter support where available; basic camping / homestay coordination; all meals on trail; water treatment support; daily weather and route briefing; permits and local access coordination.

Riders must bring: broken-in trail shoes with aggressive grip; quick-dry long sleeves and trekking pants; rain shell / poncho; leech socks or long socks; headlamp; dry bag / pack liner; personal medication and blister care; reusable water bottle or hydration bladder.

Deep Jungle Survival Expedition —

(product page): skills program with tarp shelter and reduced comfort nights.

We provide: lead jungle guide and local support; tarp / basic shelter systems; cooking and fire-control equipment; water treatment support; navigation and safety briefing; emergency communication plan; route-reference PDF and packing checklist.

Riders must bring: broken-in trail shoes or jungle boots; quick-dry long sleeves and trekking pants; rain shell / poncho; headlamp with spare batteries; personal medication and blister care; dry bag / pack liner; reusable water bottle or hydration bladder; insect repellent and leech socks.

Strongly recommended (jungle trek): leech socks on Central Highlands and Deep Jungle products; blister care on all three trek bring lists.

Optional: trekking poles — not listed on product pages; bring only if you already use them and accept porter-weight limits on Sapa.

Not recommended: ignoring guide river-crossing and leech-management briefings — Central Highlands itinerary day 1 includes leech management in the forest briefing.

Cave products range from a half-day mud chamber to a three-day swim-through system. Match the module to your booking.

Dark Cave (beginner day) —

(product page): zipline or kayak entry, mud chamber, river swim.

We provide: helmet and headlamp; life jacket; cave / water activity briefing; local guide coordination; transfer support when quoted.

Riders must bring: swimwear; quick-dry clothes; towel and dry change of clothes; secure sandals or water shoes; small dry bag for phone / valuables; personal medication if needed.

Phong Nha Jungle + Cave (two days) —

(product page): jungle approach plus managed cave chamber.

We provide: local jungle / cave guide coordination; helmet and headlamp for cave section; basic camp or homestay setup when quoted; meals on route; water treatment support; daily weather and route briefing.

Riders must bring: broken-in trail shoes with grip; quick-dry clothes; light rain shell or poncho; headlamp backup; dry bag / pack liner; insect repellent; reusable water bottle; personal medication and towel.

Hang Va (two-day technical cave) —

(product page): rocky movement, underground pools, operator-managed technical sections.

We provide: helmet and headlamp; cave safety equipment where required; certified cave guide / operator coordination; camp setup and meals when included; porter / support team coordination; daily safety and conservation briefing.

Riders must bring: broken-in trail shoes with strong grip; quick-dry trekking clothes; warm dry layer for camp; personal medication; dry bag / pack liner; headlamp backup; reusable water bottle; travel insurance details.

Tu Lan Cave Expedition (two–three days) —

(product page): jungle camps, swim-through entries, riverside overnights — dry season Feb–Aug on product page.

We provide: helmet and headlamp; life jacket for swim sections; cave-trained guides and safety crew; porter and cook team coordination; camping setup; all meals during the cave program; daily safety and conservation briefing.

Riders must bring: quick-dry clothes; sturdy trail shoes you don't mind soaking; dry bag / pack liner; light warm layer for camp; personal medication; reusable water bottle; travel insurance details.

Strongly recommended (cave): travel insurance details on Tu Lan and Hang Va bring lists; headlamp backup on multi-day jungle-cave products.

Optional: waterproof phone pouch — Tu Lan lists if needed; specialist waterproof camera gear — notIncluded on all cave products.

Not recommended: expecting Paradise Cave boardwalk conditions on

Tu Lan or

Hang Va — different product types on published pages; ignoring cave-team spacing and conservation instructions on operator-led products.

Applies to:

Mekong Delta River Expedition and

Mekong Delta Loop. Movement: sampan, bicycle, public ferries, floating markets — inside the published Nov–Apr planning band.

We provide: hybrid bicycle and helmet; private boats, sampans, and local ferries (River product) or private sampans and public ferry tickets (Loop); drinking water on boats and rides; mosquito nets at homestays; bilingual local river guide; daily route, ferry, and market-timing briefing; route-reference PDF.

Riders must bring: light long sleeves for sun and mosquitoes; sun hat; reef-safe sunscreen; quick-dry sandals; small dry bag for cameras; light rain shell in wet months; personal medication; modest clothes for family stays and pagoda visits (Loop explicitly lists pagoda dress).

Strongly recommended: modest clothes for homestay and Cham / Khmer pagoda stops — on both delta product bring lists.

Optional: cycling gloves — not on product pages; personal preference only.

Not recommended: expecting hotel-level room control every night — homestay nights are part of both

Mekong Delta River and

Mekong Delta Loop itineraries.

Applies to:

Saigon Escape Rides. Terrain: plantation lanes, coastal backroads, salt-flat causeways — two-day format, beginner–intermediate, published Nov–Apr dry season.

We provide: well-maintained motorbike (manual or semi-auto); DOT-approved helmet; riding gloves; bilingual lead guide and support coordination; fuel on route; drinking water at every stop; daily route and weather briefing.

Riders must bring: long sleeves and long trousers for sun and wind; closed shoes; sunglasses; light rain shell in shoulder months; personal medication; swimwear and small towel.

Strongly recommended: closed shoes — on the product bring list; sun coverage via long sleeves and trousers rather than short kit.

Optional: phone mount if you have one — only product that lists it.

Not recommended: packing full mountain armor — this product provides helmet and gloves, not the basic body armor bundle listed on

Ha Giang or

Northwest Loop; treating a weekend coastal ride like a remote Trail section.

Coastal legs also appear on longer products —

North–South Vietnam publishes a layering system for north, coast, and highlands on one bring list. Pack that product's list, not the Saigon Escape minimum alone.

Hardcore Enduro —

(product page) is not a motorbike touring product. Expert riders only.

We provide: enduro-capable Honda / Yamaha-style motorcycle subject to availability; helmet and body armor options; lead enduro guide plus sweep / mechanic support; trail tools, tire repair kit, and basic spares; bike setup, daily inspection, wash, and basic maintenance; recovery support protocol and bailout route planning.

Riders must bring: your own off-road boots strongly recommended (product language); goggles with spare lens; knee braces or guards; hydration pack with 2L+ capacity; riding jersey / pants and spare dry layer; personal medical items and any injury disclosures; fitness for repeated bike recovery; valid motorcycle license / IDP where applicable.

Not recommended: soft adventure-touring boots when the product strongly recommends your own off-road boots; alcohol before or during riding — explicitly notIncluded.

What should I pack for Tu Lan vs Dark Cave? Tu Lan is a multi-day swim-and-camp system — trail shoes you can soak, dry bags, warm camp layer. Dark Cave is a half-day water activity — swimwear, towel, dry change, water shoes. Different products; different modules above.

Do Mekong expeditions require cycling gear? You must bring sun and modest homestay clothing; we provide hybrid bicycle, helmet, boats, and mosquito nets on

Mekong Delta River and

Mekong Delta Loop product pages.
