Northern Vietnam Grand Expedition · Complete Guide
Northern Vietnam Grand Expedition is a private 13-day / 12-night journey through Sapa, Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang, Cao Bang and Ba Be. It is the widest northern journey in the portfolio: intentional walking modules in each region, linked by a dedicated private vehicle and driver. This is not a continuous 13-day trek, a road-free expedition or a motorbike tour.
Private departure and custom quote
Custom quote only — no fixed or from price. Solo travelers and private groups may inquire. Before deposit, a written proposal confirms the final 13-day route, selected walking modules, guide arrangement, dedicated private vehicle, accommodation, inclusions, exclusions, final price, group size and route-specific conditions.
The stable regional sequence
The commercial framework is Hanoi → Sapa → Hoang Su Phi → Ha Giang → Quan Ba / Nam Dam → Yen Minh → Hmong King’s Palace → Lung Cu / Lo Lo Chai → Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Nho Que → Meo Vac → Bao Lac → Cao Bang → Ban Gioc → Nguom Ngao → Ba Be → Hanoi. The regional sequence is stable; it connects distinct northern landscapes rather than repeating one trekking zone.
Walking plus dedicated private vehicle
Walking is used where it gives the journey its character: Sapa mountain and village routes, Hoang Su Phi terraces, selected Ha Giang plateau sections, Cao Bang landscape corridors and Ba Be lake, forest or village exploration. The dedicated private vehicle and driver connect disconnected trail systems, reduce unnecessary road walking, carry main luggage where access allows, and provide an operational option when conditions change. Vehicle support is part of the design, not a compromise.
Flexible daily modules
The exact walking routes, villages, trailheads, distances, accommodation, timing and cultural stops are selected for the departure. Weather, road and trail conditions, local access advice, traveler fitness, seasonal conditions, accommodation availability and guide assessment shape those choices. That is a professional expedition framework, not uncertainty: the group receives a coherent route without being locked into an unsafe or unsuitable daily script.
Guide, driver and local support
Default: an experienced English-speaking private guide and a dedicated private driver throughout the overland journey. Local village or regional specialists may join difficult or highly local sections where useful. We do not imply that one guide is a technical specialist in every micro-region; the proposal confirms the final guide arrangement.
Accommodation and luggage
Accommodation changes honestly with the region: Sapa homestay, bungalow, locally operated lodge or suitable hotel; Hoang Su Phi bungalow, lodge or simpler homestay; Ha Giang plateau homestay or local hotel; Cao Bang local hotel or lodge; Ba Be homestay or lodge. Private rooms are included where available and confirmed in writing. Guests carry a small trekking daypack; main luggage stays with the vehicle on accessible stages. Porter service is not standard unless separately arranged.
Fitness, weather and season
This is moderate to challenging overall because it combines active walking with multiple overland transitions. It suits active couples, solo private travelers, private small groups, photographers, repeat Vietnam travelers and strong older active travelers when intensity is adapted. Different regions can have different weather and landscape stages on the same journey. Rice timing varies by valley, elevation, farming calendar, region and year; golden rice, cloud, sunrise, clear views and dry trails are never guaranteed.
Which northern product fits you?
Sapa Hidden Trek — private 3–5 day Sapa-only trekking. Hoang Su Phi Trek — private 3–5 day terrace-focused regional trekking. Hoang Su Phi & Ha Giang Trekking Expedition — a nine-day trekking-led two-region journey. Northern Vietnam Grand Expedition (this page) — the defined 13-day private spine for the widest trekking-and-overland North journey. Northeast Border Expedition — ride-led border-road exploration. Custom Designed Journeys — a substantially different regional mix, duration or special logistics beyond published spines.
Shortening, extending and access changes
This page is the defined 13-day spine. A traveler who needs a different mix, duration or special logistics should use Custom Designed Journeys; shorter published products remain the appropriate route where one region or the nine-day Hoang Su Phi + Ha Giang progression is sufficient. If weather, road or trail access changes on departure, the guide adjusts the relevant walking module, vehicle connection, timing or accommodation while protecting the stable regional journey.
What to bring
Broken-in trail shoes with grip, a small daypack, rain shell, warm layer, dry bag or pack liner, headlamp, personal medication, blister care and reusable water bottle. Full kit context: expedition gear checklist.
